This early printed book, called an incunabulum (English “incunable”), is a living fusion of the old and the new: it has been bound in a handwritten manuscript containing medieval sheet music. The Biblia Pauperum (English “Bible for the poor”) contains various religious commentaries to help readers understand the text; many books of this kind were heavily illustrated, but this copy, published in Venice 1480 by Georgius Walch, lacks decoration of any kind except rubrication. Like many medieval manuscripts, this copy is incomplete: the first two pages are missing.
